Assemblies Update, Week of Jan. 27
Following are brief reports from the Student Assembly (SA), Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (GPSA), Employee Assembly (EA) and University Assembly (UA). For more information, including meeting agendas, minutes and audio recordings, visit http://assembly.cornell.edu.
Recent meetings:
- GPSA: Jan. 27 Gretchen Ritter, the Harold Tanner Dean of Arts and Sciences, discussed the importance of the College of Arts and Sciences to the university as a whole and answered questions about research funding, land grants and the future of graduate students; Cassie Dembosky and Jason Kahabka from the University Registrar’s office discussed changes in the academic calendar and exam dates and their effects on graduate students. Professor David Shalloway, in representing the Faculty Senate, gave a report on the divestment resolution recently passed by the senate.
- UA: Jan. 28 Passed a resolution to modify the campus code to disclose misconduct of university-registered organizations on the Group Misconduct website; Dave Howe and Ben Kuo from transportation gave a presentation on issues pertaining to parking rates and TCAT funding.
- EA: Jan. 28 Continued discussion on the need for professional non-academic staff representation; rolled out the plan for the annual elections, which was supported by a letter from President Skorton encouraging staff involvement; and toward the end of more engagement and involvement, the EA is undertaking an internal effort to re-identify and brand the assembly.
- SA Jan. 23: Voted down Resolution 19: Encouraging Community Standards and Accountability, in response to the Cornell Athletics, “Cinco de Octubre” event requesting that incident be documented on the Group Misconduct website and that all staff members, graduate teaching assistants and faculty members be encouraged to complete the online course Respect@Cornell: Eliminating Harassment and Discrimination. Resolution 29: Student Supported Net-Print Improvements was introduced, encouraging Net-Print operators to offer incentives for students to print on both sides of the paper and to purchase 100 percent recycled paper for printers.
- Assemblies Leadership Breakfast Jan. 29 The leadership of the Assemblies and the student- and employee-elected trustees joined Dean of Faculty Joe Burns and Senior Vice Provost Laura Brown, who gave a presentation on MOOCs at Cornell.
