Sheep specialist Warren Brannon dies at 91
Warren Brannon, Ph.D. ’53, professor emeritus of animal science, died Jan. 22 at age 91.
Born Aug. 16, 1922, in Loup, Neb., Brannon grew up on a family farm, attended Kearney State Teachers College for one year, then enlisted in the U.S. Army a few months after the Pearl Harbor attack. His service took him around the globe. Returning in 1945, he completed a bachelor’s degree in agriculture at the University of Nebraska and, in 1953, a Ph.D. in animal breeding and genetics at Cornell.
He spent 20 years as Cornell Cooperative Extension’s sheep specialist, helping New York state farmers with sheep-raising practices and marketing meat and wool.
He retired at age 57. He served on the New York State Beef Council, the New York State Association of Meat Processers and on the Dryden school board. He enjoyed playing trombone and singing in gospel quartets.
Brannon was predeceased by his wife, Marion. He is survived by two sisters and a brother, four children, 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service, with military honors, will be held at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, Ga. The family encourages memorial gifts to the Seventh Day Baptist Missionary Society, 19 Hillside Ave, Ashaway, RI 02804.
