Cornell economist John Cawley will travel to Ireland this month as a newly appointed Fulbright Specialist in Economics, part of a U.S. State Department program to promote connections between American scholars and their counterparts overseas.

While at the National University of Ireland (NUI) in Galway March 12-26, Cawley will help to teach a master class in health economics and support development of NUI Galway’s health economics curriculum. He will also give research seminars, meet with students and faculty members regarding their research and explore opportunities for collaboration.

“This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with the large and outstanding group of health economists at the National University of Ireland, Galway,” said Cawley. “I’m grateful to the Fulbright program for this fantastic opportunity to build on shared interests in research and teaching to strengthen international ties, share information and establish new relationships and research collaborations.”

Founded in 1946, the Fulbright Specialist Program fosters educational, political, social and cultural exchanges among scholars and professionals in more than 140 countries. Cawley will remain on the specialist roster for five years, with the possibility of being matched to additional programs abroad during that time.

Cawley, professor of policy analysis and management and of economics, co-directs the Cornell Institute on Health Economics, Health Behaviors and Disparities, where he is recognized for his research in the economics of obesity and risky health behaviors. He has recently evaluated the impact of soda taxes and estimated obesity’s effect on U.S. medical care costs.

Ted Boscia is director of communications and media for the College of Human Ecology.
