Cornell wins national award for Campus Store's Books in Print online

Cornell has been recognized by a national awards program for an online version of Books in Print developed by Campus Store employees.

The Higher Education Awards Program, sponsored by the National Association of Colleges and University Business Officers (NACUBO) and Barnes & Noble College Bookstores, honors college and university initiatives that improve quality and reduce costs. On behalf of Cornell, Senior Vice President Frederick A. Rogers will accept the $2,500 cash award at a ceremony July 21 in Boston.

"This national recognition from NACUBO is a ringing endorsement of the efforts Cornell employees are making to improve the quality and service of university operations," Rogers said.

The online version of Books in Print, which catalogs books currently on the market, was developed in conjunction with publisher R.R. Bowker in 1995 and allows individuals with a Cornell computer network I.D. free 24-hour access to this popular resource.

"Having Books in Print online has allowed us to give our customers better service," said Emily Gray, manager of the Campus Store's general book department.

Unlike the bound copy of Books in Print, the online version is fully searchable by keyword and subject, making it possible to locate a title with incomplete information. Books in Print also provides information on whether a book currently is available at the Campus Store.

In April Cornell presented the Campus Store with a $300 cash award for the Books in Print project as part of its own efforts to recognize employee initiatives.

Twelve Cornell employee initiatives have been recognized by NACUBO since 1988.

More than 30 higher education institutions submitted 49 case studies of initiatives that improved their services, reduced expenditures and generated revenue. Finalists were chosen by the Higher Education Awards Program Council.

NACUBO, founded in 1962, is a non-profit professional organization representing chief administrative and financial officers at more than 2,100 colleges and universities across the country. NACUBO's mission is to promote sound management and financial practices at colleges and universities. More than two-thirds of all institutions of higher education in the United States are members of NACUBO.
