Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences honors outstanding teachers, scholars

Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences honored outstanding teaching and scholarship at its annual Dean's Awards Convocation on May 1. Dean Philip E. Lewis led the afternoon celebration in Lecture Room D in Goldwin Smith Hall.

The awards and recipients were as follows:

  • Degree marshals and banner bearers, Class of '98: Katherine Henzler, Daniel Klein, Karla Lambert, Ilya Nasrallah, Janice Wynn.
  • Robert and Helen Appel Fellowships for Humanists and Social Scientists: Professor John Borneman, anthropology; Professor Thomas Borstelmann, history.
  • Robert A. and Donna B. Paul Awards for Excellence in Advising: Professor Lydia Fakundiny, English; Professor Glenn Altschuler, American studies.
  • Stephen and Margery Russell Distinguished Teaching Awards: Howard Schweber, teaching assistant; Professor Keshav Pingali, computer science; Professor Daniel Schwarz, English; Professor Daniel Usner, history.
  • John M. and Emily B. Clark Distinguished Teaching Awards: Bruce Johnson, lecturer; Daniel Donaghy, teaching assistant; Meredith Doran, teaching assistant; Jennifer Hill, teaching assistant; Min Hur, teaching assistant; Ashley Jones, teaching assistant; Lisa Lavoie, teaching assistant; Nina Revoyr, teaching assistant; David Reed Solomon, teaching assistant; Anne Stork, teaching assistant; Ji Zhu, teaching assistant.

Associate Deans Thak Chaloemtiarana and Lynne Abel presented the awards, and Mary Beth Norton, the Mary Donlon Alger Professor of American History, gave an address titled "The Problem of 'Truth' in History."
