Three Cornell graduates from the College of Architecture, Art and Planning win Javits Fellowships

Three graduates of Cornell's College of Architecture, Art and Planning have been awarded 1998 Jacob K. Javits Fellowships.

The Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, is designed to assist students of superior ability to pursue graduate programs leading to a doctorate or master of fine arts degree in selected fields in the arts, humanities and social sciences. The award provides up to $15,000 per year for up to four years of graduate study.

The Javits Fellows are:

  • Mark Parsons, who will receive his MFA from Cornell May 24. Parsons will teach sculpture classes at Cornell this summer before moving to New York City to work full-time as a sculptor. Parsons is the son of Charles and Sandria Parsons of Marion, Mass.
  • Jill Magid, who received her BFA in sculpture from Cornell in 1995. Magid will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Master of Science in Visual Studies program this fall. She currently resides in Manhattan, where she has her own art studio. She also teaches art at the Jewish Museum and a private school on the Upper East Side. Magid is the daughter of Dennis and Jan Magid of Easton, Conn.
  • Laura Nova, who earned her BFA and BA from Cornell in 1996. Nova will attend the Art Institute of Chicago. Since graduating from Cornell, Nova has lived in Israel as an artist-in-residence and has exhibited her sculpture there. She has also exhibited work in the Mizeo Museum in Denver. Nova is the daughter of Dr. Sheldon and Phyllis Nova of West Hartford, Conn.
