Barbara Krause is named assistant secretary of the corporation at Cornell

Barbara Krause, Cornell University's campus judicial administrator, has been named assistant secretary of the corporation and associate university counsel.

Krause, a 1986 Cornell Law School graduate, resigned as judicial administrator (JA) effective Jan. 4 to assume her new post. She replaces Joyce Cima, who was assistant secretary of the corporation for 37 years. Krause served as JA for more than 3 years.

The appointment was made by James Mingle, university counsel and secretary of the corporation, with the approval of the executive committee of the Board of Trustees.

"I am delighted that Barbara Krause has joined our office," Mingle said. "I am confident that Barbara's familiarity with university policies, strong organizational skills and broad experience as an attorney will serve her well in her dual duties as assistant secretary of the corporation and associate university counsel."

In her new role, Krause will provide support to the university Board of Trustees and to senior administrative staff. She will be responsible for ensuring that items of business are brought before the board in the correct manner, that board issues are voted on properly and that records are maintained in compliance with university and government requirements. In addition, she will work with the University Counsel's Office on other legal issues, as time permits.

"My main goal is to continue providing a high level of support for the trustees and administrative staff and to help them do their jobs well," Krause said.

Linda Falkson, who was Ithaca city prosecutor from 1994 until joining Cornell in June 1998, will serve as acting JA while a national search is conducted for the position.

Krause received her A.B. in philosophy and German in 1981 from Duke University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She also is an athlete who played semiprofessional basketball in Dorsten, Germany, for two years after graduating from Duke, where she was captain of the women's varsity basketball team.

Earlier this month Krause, who grew up in Freeport, Maine, and helped lead the high school basketball team to a state championship title, learned she will be inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in a ceremony June 6.
