Cornell announces finalists in design competition

Cornell University has announced four finalists in an invited architecture design competition for its College of Architecture, Art and Planning.

The $25 million project is intended to provide new studio space and other related services and offices for the Department of Architecture as well as a major auditorium and other classrooms. The envisioned facility will be a highly visible building at a prominent entrance to the university, adjacent to historic Sibley Hall.

The four internationally acclaimed architects named as finalists are Steven Holl Architects (New York), Thom Mayne with Morphosis Architects (Santa Monica, Calif.), Tod Williams Billie Tsien and Associates (New York) and Peter Zumthor, Architect (Switzerland). The competitors will present their designs to the university community and the selection jury April 18 and 19.

"The competition process will provide us an opportunity to examine the work of several of the world's most recognized architects," said Cornell President Hunter Rawlings. "The entire project exemplifies Cornell's commitment to the future -- to the students who come here to study and to the quality of our campus and facilities."

Porus Olpadwala, dean of the College of Architecture, Art and Planning, added, "In seeking the highest quality design that is responsive to our present and future needs and the campus context, the process will also be an invaluable learning experience for our faculty and students."

According to Roger Schluntz, FAIA, the appointed professional adviser for the design competition, the process is intended to encourage architects to design a building whose primary function will be to enhance teaching and learning. "Additionally, we are asking the architects to envision a building that will instill a strong sense of identity and sense of place for this internationally recognized program," Schluntz said.

Construction of the $25 million project is expected to be completed by fall 2004.
