Supermodel and eating disorders expert will give an open lecture, Jan. 28

ITHACA, N.Y. -- An international supermodel and an expert on eating disorders will lecture together at Cornell University Tuesday, Jan. 28, on the subject of normal/abnormal eating behavior and body image issues. Their appearance is part of the 22nd Health Awareness Week on campus, Jan. 27-31.

Model Magali Amadei and Claire Mysko of the American Anorexia/Bulimia Association will speak in Uris Hall auditorium at 7 p.m. Their talk, free and open to the public, is sponsored by Cornell Fitness Centers, Cornell Community Centers, the Cornell Healthy Eating Program, Panhellenic Association, InterFraternity Council and Multicultural Greek Letter Council.

Amadei was born in 1974 in Nice, France, and began her modeling career at a young age. She achieved international recognition doing cover work for such publications as Harper's Bazaar , Cosmopolitan, Elle, Glamour and Vogue . She also appeared in the movie "The Wedding Planner," with Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Lopez. As a result of her own battle with bulimia, Amadei became the first top female model to step forward and tell her story on behalf of an eating disorders organization, the American Anorexia/Bulimia Association.

As administrative director of the American Anorexia/Bulimia Association, Mysko has overseen numerous educational outreach programs and managed the organization's active phone and online support efforts. She also has appeared as a national media expert on body image issues. She developed an extensive eating disorders and body image section for the PBS Kids Web site, "It's My Life," and is the online content manager for Girls Inc., a national nonprofit youth organization that provides positive educational programs for millions of American girls, particularly those in high-risk, underserved areas. Mysko holds a master's degree in gender studies and feminist theory from the New School University.

This past September, Amadei and Mysko presented at the first National Eating Disorders Association Conference in Santa Monica, Calif.
