Cornell Police to increase traffic enforcement

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell University Police will operate a sobriety checkpoint on campus between March 25 and May 4.

This checkpoint was originally scheduled for the weekend of March 8 but was postponed due to bad weather.

Drivers can find out in advance where the checkpoint will be by going to the department's web site, http://www.cupolice.cornell.edu , and checking out the section called "Drink and drive. You lose." The advance warning is an effort to draw public attention to the Cornell Police web site, which contains information about New York state traffic laws and driver and passenger safety.

Sgt. Charles Howard, coordinator of traffic enforcement activities, said that in addition to the sobriety checkpoint, Cornell Police will have extra patrols out to combat aggressive driving. Police will target drivers who run red lights and stop signs and do not yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

The activities are part of Cornell Police's ongoing efforts to improve traffic safety on campus and are supported by a grant from the New York State Selective Traffic Enforcement Program.
