Duffield Hall dedication is Oct. 6 at 8 p.m.

Duffield Hall, Cornell University's landmark nanotechnology center and its first new research facility of the 21st century, will be dedicated tomorrow (Wednesday, Oct. 6) in a ceremony in the building's atrium at 8 p.m.

The building will officially be opened by Cornell President Jeffrey S. Lehman. A presentation will then be made to Lehman by NASA astronaut Daniel Barry, a 1975 Cornell graduate.

The media is invited to attend the dedication and other events during the week celebrating the official opening of Duffield Hall, which is on the newly landscaped Pew Engineering Quad between Phillips and Upson halls.

Other events during the week include talks by two prominent pioneers of the computer age:

  • Irwin Jacobs, a 1954 Cornell graduate, the founder and CEO of Qualcomm Inc. He will speak at the Cornell NanoScale Facility's 25th anniversary celebration on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 9:25 a.m. in Barnes Hall Auditorium.
  • Jeff Hawkins, a 1979 Cornell graduate, the inventor of the PalmPilot. He will speak at the second day of the Duffield Hall opening celebration on Thursday, Oct. 7, at noon in Barnes Hall Auditorium. His topic will be "Passion in Science: How Great Achievements Are Made in Science and Technology."
