Carol L. Anderson, professor emerita of human development at Cornell University and president of LORAC Consulting, received the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences' (AAFCS) Distinguished Service Award, the association's highest honor, at the recent AAFCS 96th Annual Conference and Expo in Minneapolis, Minn.

Anderson was recognized for her more than 40 years of outstanding contributions to family and consumer sciences through education at the local, state and national levels. The majority of Anderson's career has been in the land-grant university system and the Cooperative Extension System, including positions with the University of Wisconsin, Iowa State University and Cornell, where she worked from 1980 to 2001. 

Her academic and professional efforts focus on human and family development, especially as they relate to policy. Anderson has completed dozens of research and evaluation projects, authored a multitude of papers, publications and workshop presentations and provided administrative leadership to university and extension staff. 

She earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Ph.D. degree from Iowa State University, all in family and consumer sciences. At LORAC she focuses on program evaluation and strategic planning consulting. 

AAFCS is the only not-for-profit organization working to improve the lives of individuals, families and communities. Its 9,000 members are elementary, secondary and postsecondary educators, researchers and administrators; cooperative extension educators; and other professionals in business and industry, not-for-profit organizations and government.
