Oct. 10 symposium to honor career of nutritional epidemiologist Jean-Pierre Habicht

To honor the 40-year career of Jean-Pierre Habicht, the James Jamison Professor of Nutritional Epidemiology at Cornell University who retired June 30, the university's Division of Nutritional Sciences is hosting a celebration symposium, The Changing Face of Human Nutrition: 1965-2005, on Oct.10 at 9 a.m. in 700 Clark Hall.

The symposium, which is free and open to the public, features renowned nutrition experts. The schedule includes:

  • Reynaldo Martorell, the Robert W. Woodruff Professor of International Nutrition, Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, speaking on nutritional epidemiology at 9:30 a.m.;
  • Juan Rivera Dommarco, director, Center for Investigation of Nutrition and Health, National Institute of Public Health, Mexico, speaking on interventions in maternal and child nutrition at 10:15 a.m.;
  • Malden C. Nesheim, provost emeritus, Cornell, talking about building human and institutional capacity at 11 a.m.;
  • Linda Meyers, director, Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine, Washington, D.C., discussing nutrition policy in the United States at 1:30 p.m.;
  • Cesar Victora, professor of epidemiology at the Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil, discussing international child health at 2:15 p.m.

Habicht, a medical doctor, is the final speaker; he will reflect on how his field has changed over his career, 28 years of it at Cornell. A reception honoring Habicht will follow at 4 p.m. in the Andrew D. White House.

In addition to his Cornell responsibilities, Habicht serves as an adviser to the United Nations and government health and nutrition agencies and is a member of various advisory boards. His past professional experience includes special assistant to the director of Division of Health Examination Statistics at the National Center for Health Statistics, World Health Organization medical officer at the Instituto de Nutricion de Centro America y Panama and professor of maternal and child health at the University of San Carlos, Guatemala.

Habicht received his M.D. (1964) from the Universities of Geneva and Zurich, his M.P.H. (1968) from the Harvard School of Public Health and Ph.D. (1969) in nutritional biochemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
