Geddes to be appointed to federal commission

President George W. Bush intends to appoint R. Richard Geddes to the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission for the life of the commission, according to an April 6 White House press release.

Geddes, associate professor of policy analysis and management at Cornell University since 2002, will be one of 12 members on the commission. Created in the 2005 Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act -- A Legacy for Users, the commission will study the future of federal transportation policy and revenue needs.

In 2004-05, Geddes served as a senior staff economist with Bush's Council of Economic Advisers. His scholarship focuses on the effects of regulation on corporate governance, public utility regulation, postal economics and the economics of women's property rights. He is the editor of the book "Competing with the Government: Anticompetitive Behavior and Public Enterprises" (2004) and author of "Saving the Mail: How to Solve the Problems of the U.S. Postal Service" (2003).

He earned Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in economics from the University of Chicago and a B.S. degree in economics and finance from Towson University.
