Mental health expert to talk about positive psychology, post-traumatic stress and happiness

Author of 28 books, guest on "Oprah" and the "Today" show and psychotherapist Bill O'Hanlon will present two workshops March 11 in the Memorial Room at Willard Straight Hall. Both are free and open to the public.

The workshop, "From Post-Traumatic Stress to Post-Traumatic Success," slated for 1-4:30 p.m. (light refreshments, 12:30-1 p.m.), is geared toward staff, faculty and community members. It is especially applicable to anyone with an advising, counseling or human service aspect to their job as well as to anyone seeking enhanced personal life skills. O'Hanlon will share examples of positive growth following trauma and crisis, and strategies for transforming trauma into more positive directions.

Seating is limited and registration is required via e-mail by forwarding your name and title/department (as they will appear on name tags) to Denise Zajac at dmp10@cornell.edu. For questions, call 255-3608.

The second workshop, "The Science of Happiness -- Using Positive Psychology Research to Increase Your Life Satisfaction and Happiness Levels Now and in the Future," is scheduled for 7-8:30 p.m. (no registration required, reception and book signing at 8:30 p.m.).

Positive psychology is the study of human happiness and life satisfaction -- what works in life as demonstrated through research. But it isn't always obvious how to translate this research into your life. This presentation will offer research that pertains both to U.S. and international cultures and ways to put this research into practice.

The presentation is geared for students but is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.

O'Hanlon's books include "Write Is a Verb," "Do One Thing Different," "Pathways to Spirituality," "Change 101: A Practical Guide to Creating Change" and "Thriving Through Crisis." He has been a top-rated presenter at many national conferences and was awarded the "Outstanding Mental Health Educator of the Year" in 2001 by the New England Educational Institute. His presentations are reported to be as entertaining as they are educational.
