Upcoming webinars to focus on flexible work arrangements
By Nancy Doolittle
Two upcoming webinar workshops offered by the Office of Workforce Diversity, Equity and Life Quality will help supervisors and staff members develop and implement flexible work arrangements. The first, geared toward supervisors, is scheduled for April 21, 10-10:45 a.m.; the second, for staff, is April 29, noon-12:45 p.m.
Both will show how flexibility -- either in when or where work is performed -- can fulfill business needs while also supporting the needs of employees to balance work and family responsibilities. Flexible work arrangements may entail changing the business day start and stop times to dovetail with child care or public transportation schedules; instituting compressed work weeks (for example, working four 10-hour days instead of five eight-hour days); telecommuting, or working from home; and job sharing (two people work half-time in the same position).
These webinars address such concerns as negotiating the arrangement to the satisfaction of both employee and supervisor, effectively managing these arrangements to meet the goals of the department, managing the impact of flex arrangements on co-workers, documenting the arrangement and re-evaluating its usefulness.
