Weeklong program to help improve students' research

The Information Competency Initiative is seeking applications for its weeklong May 24-28 program to help faculty improve the research components of their classes. The institute, supported by Cornell University Library and the provost and vice provost for undergraduate education, aims to build a community dedicated to improving student research skills.

An additional grant this year will allow the program, now in its third year, to continue and to help faculty address the information literacy standards required by Middle States accreditation.

During the weeklong training, individual faculty members pair up with teams of librarians, information technologists and pedagogical experts. Participating faculty members also benefit from the initiative's yearlong team partnership, a supportive community dedicated to helping faculty, a small stipend that allows faculty to bring ideas from the program into their classrooms and an increased focus on digital literacy and assessment.

The program, which is open to all Cornell faculty members, has generated high praise from past participants. Faculty members and students report that they can find relevant sources faster and structure their research better.

The application can be found at http://infocomp.library.cornell.edu/?q=application, and questions can be addressed to infocompetency@cornell.edu. Applications are due March 1.
