International Jungian studies conference set for Aug. 10-14

Cornell will welcome more than 100 scholars, artists and clinicians at the first joint international conference of the Jungian Society for Scholarly Studies (JSSS) and the International Association for Jungian Studies (IAJS), Aug. 10-14 at the Robert Purcell Community Center on North Campus.

The conference, "On the Edge: Psyche in Ethics, the Arts and Nature," will feature 80 presentations on a variety of research on Carl Jung's work and analytical psychology.

The event is hosted by Don Fredericksen, professor of film and director of undergraduate studies in film in the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance. He is executive committee chair of the IAJS and secretary and an editorial board member of the JSSS, which also held its 2009 conference at Cornell.

Fredericksen said the two professional organizations hope to "combine the best traditions of both groups in focused, congenial discussions of important Jungian research while reflecting the breadth and depth of this rapidly expanding, international, multidisciplinary field."

Some conference panels are designed to reflect Jungians' interest in environmental and social issues outside of clinical and counseling situations, Fredericksen said.

Topics will include the ethical aspects of Jungian clinical work, dream analysis, individuation, the nature and functions of depth psychology, and cultural analysis of literature, film, art and culture from a depth psychology perspective. The schedule also includes dramatic presentations, plenary speakers and discussion forums.
