Flu vaccine clinics scheduled
By Nancy Doolittle
Gannett Health Services' 2010-11 supply of seasonal flu vaccine has arrived, and clinics began this week. The next clinic will be held Sept. 28 at the Willard Straight Memorial Room, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Additional clinics are scheduled for Sept. 29 (5-7 p.m. Tanner Lounge, Appel Community Center) and Sept. 30 (9 a.m.-noon, East Hill Office Building Atrium; 5-7 p.m., first floor lounge, Robert Purcell Community Center) and throughout the fall semester.
Flu vaccines are free to enrolled Cornell students, staff, faculty and retirees with Cornell ID. Student spouses and same-sex partners will be charged $30. Spouses and same-sex partners of staff and faculty should seek the vaccine from their primary-care providers.
According to Gannett, vaccine (both shots and mist) is plentiful this year and will protect against several flu viruses: influenza A (H3N2 virus), influenza B virus and the 2009 H1N1 virus. Because the vaccine viruses have been updated, Gannett recommends that members of the Cornell community get vaccinated this year even if they received an H1N1 or a seasonal vaccine last year. Immunity sets in about two weeks after vaccination, and the flu vaccine provides protection for the entire flu season.
