Humanities conference to focus on global aesthetics

Cornell's Society for the Humanities and the Mellon Central New York Humanities Corridor will host "Global Aesthetics: Intersecting Culture, Theory, Practice," a conference Oct. 15-16 at the A.D. White House.

The conference reflects the society's 2010-11 focal theme on global aesthetics. Leading international artists, curators and scholars in the fields of art, music, media, aesthetics and critical theory, including society fellows, will gather to discuss transformations of aesthetics and interdisciplinary practice in the age of networked connection.

"The conference will examine global approaches to aesthetics as practiced in Latin America, Asia, Australia, Africa and the Middle East, in addition to how these global approaches dialogue with both indigenous practices and the Occidental aesthetic tradition," said Timothy Murray, director of the society and professor of comparative literature and English at Cornell.

Among the presentations will be a plenary address on "Global Aesthetics and its Discontents" by Bruno Bosteels, professor of Romance studies and Society for the Humanities faculty fellow, Oct. 15 at 5:15 p.m. in Goldwin Smith Hall's Lewis Auditorium.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Humanist Foundation, Rose Goldsen Lecture Series, Departments of Art and History of Art, Institute for Comparative Modernities and the journal Diacritics.

Linda Glaser is a staff writer for the College of Arts and Sciences.
