Hwang is elected to the American Statistical Association

Jiunn Tzon Hwang, professor of mathematics, has been elected a fellow of the American Statistical Association for outstanding contributions and leadership in statistical science. The 2011 fellows will be recognized in a ceremony Aug. 2 at the annual Joint Statistical Meetings in Miami Beach, Fla.

Hwang earned his undergraduate and master's degrees in Taiwan and his Ph.D. in statistics from Purdue University in 1979, the same year he joined the Cornell faculty. His main areas of interest are statistics and confidence set theory, and he has recently begun to focus on the theory of statistical intervals, such as confidence intervals, prediction intervals and tolerance intervals. While his work is primarily theoretical, the results are often directly relevant to scientific and engineering applications.

The American Statistical Association, a scientific and educational society founded in 1839, is the second oldest continuously operating professional society in the United States and has 18,000 members.
