Jason Moran, left, and Dave Holland will perform at Cornell on Jan. 28.

Groundbreaking jazz pianist Jason Moran will be joined by bassist Dave Holland in an exclusive, intimate performance for the Cornell Concert Series, Saturday, Jan. 28, at 8 p.m. in Barnes Hall.

There is open but limited seating in Barnes Hall; general admission tickets are $35, $25 for students.

Moran and Holland's appearance on campus marks a rare public performance as a duo, although they have worked together regularly in the Overtone Quartet (with saxophonist Chris Potter and drummer Eric Harland). Both are artists-in-residence at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

DownBeat magazine has called Moran's playing "sparklingly intuitive, inventive, spontaneous [and] unassailably brilliant." A musician, composer and recording artist, Moran is the recipient of numerous honors, including a 2010 MacArthur Foundation award. He serves as the artistic adviser for jazz at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

In his previous Cornell appearances, Moran brought his group The Bandwagon in 2006 to Statler Auditorium and led The Big Bandwagon two years later for "In My Mind: Monk at Town Hall, 1959," a multimedia tribute to Thelonious Monk, in Bailey Hall.

Celebrated bassist Dave Hollandis a versatile master of tone and rhythm, continuing a rich and kaleidoscopic career in his fifth decade as a performer. The native of England received his big break from Miles Davis, playing during the legendary trumpeter's epochal "bitches brew" period.

Mezzo-soprano Alicia Hall Moran was originally scheduled to perform on this date, but is unable to travel to Ithaca due to her role in the Broadway production of "Porgy and Bess."
