Ganem to receive American Chemical Society award

Ganem

Bruce Ganem, Cornell's Franz and Elisabeth Roessler Professor of Chemistry, will receive the Esselen Award for Chemistry during the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society meeting April 19 in Cambridge, Mass.

The award annually recognizes a chemist whose scientific and technical work has contributed to the public well-being and has communicated positive values of the chemical profession. During the meeting, Ganem will deliver an address titled "Lost (Sometimes) in Translation: Advancing Chemical Discoveries Beyond the Laboratory."

Ganem, who specializes in synthetic organic chemistry, leads research into innovative strategies for the design and development of multicomponent reactions (MCRs). These are processes in which three or more reactants combine to form a product that incorporates structural features of each reagent. MCRs have played a central role in modern pharmaceutical and drug discovery research.

The Esselen Award was established in 1987 to honor the memory of Gustavus John Esselen, a distinguished member of the Northeastern Section.
