Alumna also dismayed at lack of women entomologists

Good Morning:

I read [Elisabeth Rosen's] article about May Berenbaum and her presentation at the Frontiers Symposium with great interest. I remember Dr. Berenbaum when she was a graduate student, and I was enrolled in Entomology 212.

Her views, sadly, are correct and were reinforced by a book I received this week. "The World of Insects: The Harvard University Press Reader" -- edited by Ring Cardé (who did his Ph.D. work with Wendell Roelofs [the Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor of Insect Biochemistry in the Department of Entomology at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station] in Geneva) and Vincent Resh -- is a compilation of chapters by entomologists; authors include Drs. Thomas Eisner and Thomas Seeley. However, there is not a single work by a woman entomologist in the 20 chapters. I was hoping to see something by Dr. Berenbaum, who is an accomplished writer for both the science and general public audiences and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Congratulations, Elisabeth, and to the Class of 2012.
