About 75 protesters rallied May 16 in front of Day Hall to demand that the university ramp up its efforts to to curb racism -- or as they characterized it, "oppression" -- on campus.

The group, described as a coalition of Cornell and Ithaca College students and Ithaca residents, first assembled at the Sigma Pi fraternity house on University Avenue -- the site of a racially tinged incident May 6 that sparked outrage across campus -- and marched uphill to the administration building.

There, with the aid of a bullhorn, a series of speakers, including faculty from the Africana and Latino studies programs, undergraduates and graduate students, expressed concerns similar to those raised at a community forum May 9.

They concluded by presenting a list of "demands and propositions," which was accepted by Dean of Students Kent Hubbell on behalf of the administration.
