Cornell faculty members Philip Liu and Michael Todd have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

Liu, the Class of 1912 Professor of Engineering and director of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Todd, the Leon C. Welch Professor Emeritus in the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering, are among 67 new members and 12 foreign members elected this year, bringing total U.S. membership to 2,263 and foreign members to 221. Liu and Todd join 33 current or former Cornell faculty who are NAE members.

Liu was honored for his coastal engineering research, education, computer modeling, and leadership in tsunami and wave damage. Todd was cited for contributions to the theory and application of algorithms for continuous optimization.

Election to the NAE is one of the highest professional honors for an engineer. An induction ceremony will take place in October in Washington, D.C.
