Stephen Ceci, the Helen L. Carr Professor of Developmental Psychology in the Department of Human Development, recently was elected president of the Society for Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Science, a society of the American Psychological Association. His term began Aug. 11.

The society focuses on supporting research through advocacy; training and education; public policy; and outreach. As president, Ceci will have an opportunity to help shape national policy related to cognitive science. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the recipient of numerous national and international awards in psychology.

“This appointment attests again that some of the best scholarship and academic leadership comes from interdisciplinary departments like human development, with a rich environment to support integrative basic and translational science,” said Qi Wang, chair and professor of human development, in the College of Human Ecology.

The society is a scholarly organization of psychologists in the area of cognitive science and general experimental psychology. Its goals are to promote, advance and increase inclusion and exchange of ideas among scholars in the many subfields of experimental psychology and the many topic areas of cognitive psychology, both in basic and applied research. 

Its members are employed in a variety of settings including universities, colleges, government and industry, and are united by their commitment to the development of experimental psychology as a science.
