Poetry in almost every pocket ... now for mobile devices

Cornell's contributions to a National Poetry Month celebration will have two additional dimensions this year, putting poetry into more pockets.

The traditional chapbook produced for distribution at the annual Poem in Your Pocket Day, April 14 in New York City, will be accompanied by a website designed to be read on mobile devices.

In Ithaca, a local edition of Poem in Your Pocket Day, April 28 at Ithaca High School, will feature Cornell poets reading from their work with student poets from Ithaca College and the Ithaca City School District.

The 2011 chapbook features verse by the eight graduate student writers in Alice Fulton's M.F.A. seminar in poetry.

"We each contributed up to two poems that we felt would communicate best with an audience of high school students, but that could resonate with anyone," said M.F.A. student Alex Chertoff, who coordinated the chapbook project.

Some of the poems in the chapbook have been previously published in various literary magazines, added Chertoff, who also wrote the book's introduction. The cover art is by Sally Wen Mao, a student in the seminar.

The companion website, http://poetryinyourpocket.cornell.edu, was created by Bob Marteal, web designer for the College of Arts and Sciences. The site is now online, and future chapbooks will be added to it each year.

Paper copies will be distributed to attendees at a public event -- geared to students in grades K-12 -- April 14 in Bryant Park in midtown Manhattan, and to every student at the Cornell partner school Food and Finance High School.

More than 2,800 chapbooks are being printed, for free distribution at Food and Finance, Bryant Park, Ithaca High School and the Cornell campus.

Cornell began participating in Poem in Your Pocket Day in New York City in 2007, with M.F.A. poets reading in Bryant Park and distributing "A Fragile Index of the World," a collection of verse by Cornell writers that was published for President David Skorton's 2006 inauguration. Chapbooks with student verse and artwork have been printed and distributed at the annual event since 2008.

Poem in Your Pocket Day is produced by the New York City Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs and the Bryant Park Corp.
