Through a partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension, New York City’s Department for the Aging will provide child development training to volunteers in its Foster Grandparent Program.
The Cornell United Way campaign, a yearly campus drive that supports United Way of Tompkins County by raising funds for community members in need, began its annual campaign on Oct. 12.
One year into the Engaged College Initiative, leadership from involved colleges, staff from the David M. Einhorn Center for Community Engagement and community engagement experts discuss progress so far and future plans.
Their projects served communities across New York, from improving soil at community farms in New York City to developing an anti-racism curriculum for Hudson Valley teens.
A recent study brought together Cornell students and faculty and New York City teenagers to explore how nutrition education can improve nutrition and promote positive youth development in places with little or no access to healthy, affordable food.
Jonathan Weston ’04, manager of Panama Rocks, a park and geologic site in New York’s Chautauqua County, received the Cornell New York State Hometown Alumni Award Oct. 6 in a virtual ceremony.
Carlos Jay Espinosa was awarded the Dean’s Scholarship from Cornell University Precollege Studies to take a biology course with Cornell faculty and earn college credit.
“As a first-generation student, and one who didn’t come from a well-off household, I always dreamt of attending international opportunities like this, since programs of this kind are scarce in my country,” Espinosa said. “I thought of that dream as something impossible.”
